Animals in Distress is a 501c3, all volunteer, non-profit organization that has serviced the Mercer County area for more than 30 years. As one of the oldest rescue groups in the area, our primary focus has been the rescue of abandoned, abused and neglected cats and kittens. Many of the animals that we have available for adoption come from the Mercerville Animal Hospital. The hospital receives sick and injured animals directly from the Hamilton Township Animal Shelter. The hospital takes care of the medical needs of the sick and injured until they are healthy and ready to find a permanent and loving home. In addition, some animals are turned in by good Samaritans or members of Animals in Distress. Most of the animals at the hospital are never returned to the shelter. Once they are ready to be placed, Animals in Distress takes over their care and the adoption process. Animals in Distress maintains an adoption room at the hospital where the animals have space to run and play or sit at a window and watch birds and squirrels and enjoy the sunlight. The hospital staff continues to monitor the health of all our animals to insure the animals going to their new homes leave in good health. While we very rarely take in dogs, we have on occasion helped people who incur sudden and high medical bills for their sick or injured dogs. We can be found every Saturday from 10:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the PetsMart Luv-A-Pet adoption center in West Windsor, NJ. You can also see the animals we have available at the Mercerville Animal Hospital, weekdays from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. by appointment. To schedule a time, please call Barbara at 609-587-4772 or email at babs48@optonline.net. Our adoption fee is $75.00, which includes all vaccinations (including rabies), testing for feline leukemia and AIDS and the spay/neuter of the animal.
