Adoption Process
You must be 21 or older to adopt.
-
Fill out our Adoption Application. Be sure to give your vet's office permission to speak with us - we can't process your application without it.
-
We review your application. If we think we have the right fit for your family, we will reach out to you to schedule a meet&greet appointment within 24-48 hours.
-
Adoption meeting: You & your family come meet our kitties at the cottage and/or in their foster home(s). You can let us know during the meeting if you'd like to move forward with adoption, or you can go home and think about it. We understand that it is a big decision. Once you give us your answer, our Adoption team discusses further. We get back to you within 24-48 hours with an approval.
-
Schedule pickup date: If you are approved to adopt, we will reach out to you and schedule a time to pickup your new family member(s) and send you an email with helpful information on taking care of your new pet(s) and helping them settle into your home.
-
Pickup cat, sign adoption contract & sign up for a month of FREE pet insurance: At this time, we will review and finalize the adoption contract with you, and go over all of their medical paperwork. We provide you with samples of your new cat(s)' food and any medications. ***We have also partnered with Trupanion to provide one month of free pet insurance to adopters! No payment information is required at time of sign up. After one month, you can opt to continue your coverage, enroll with a different company of your choosing, or discontinue coverage.***
-
Follow ups: After you take your cat(s) home, one of our volunteers will follow up with you at 2 days and 2 weeks post-adoption to see how your new cat is doing and answer any questions you may have. We are always available to support you and your adopted cats.

Featured Cat
Sasha
SASHA - I am a super loving lap cat looking for a snuggley human who enjoys curling up in blankets as much as I do. If you want a couch potato to read & watch TV with , and understand the joy that comes from a one & only pet relationship, then I am the girl for you. When I'm not cuddling with you there is a good chance I'll get a burst of play energy and/or just follow you around to supervise any activities you might need help with. Other pets really stress me out and when that happens my body flares up with very painful crystals in my bladder, so I am on a special diet and anti-anxiety medicine to keep that from happening. I would love nothing more than a nice lap to snuggle on and love from my human. If you aren't sure if you are ready for a full commitment, I am available to foster as a trial to see if we are a match. <3
Return Policy
Animals In Distress has a 100% no-questions-asked return policy. If at any time you cannot or do not wish to keep a cat you have adopted from us, we will accept the cat back immediately. To make arrangements, please contact us by email at animalsindistressnj@gmail.com.
Furthermore, please note that our Adoption Contract does not allow the transfer of the ownership of an adopted cat. If you believe you have found a suitable home for a former AID cat, please contact us, and we will work with you to rehome the cat.
We’re committed to making each adoption a success, which means supporting our adopters whenever they need us. Please email animalsindistressnj@gmail.com for any concerns.
